I LOVE to beautify my yard and porches with flowers! Buying flowers for each season can be expensive. One way that I save money on flowers is to shop at William’s Greenhouse here in Harriman, TN which is just a couple of miles from my house. WOOT! The plants, vegetables, flowers, herbs are all grown there. I could spend hours there! It is such a happy place. This is just one section of one of the green houses. Last week I purchased some beautiful Contessa Double Pink Ivy Geraniums here. When I finished the flower boxes on the Upstairs Porch Uplift, I knew exactly what I wanted to plant in them. Ivy Geraniums! Sadly, they were no where to be found, so I settled for English Ivy and some Wave Petunias. They looked awesome, but the Petunias required a lot of water and would brown and have to be pinched off daily. We had a relatively mild winter that year and the Ivy looked good all winter long and the Petunias actually came back and lasted through the summer. So I would say, I definitely got my money’s worth.
Here they are in there glory! Aren’t they just gorgeous and so healthy? I can’t wait for them to bloom! These are Contessa Double Pinks Ivy Geraniums that will hang over the flower boxes like Ivy. I was able to get there early enough this year to get them. I need eleven of the same color and there were less than $20.00! Note: If you want an annual that hangs over a flower box or in a hanging basket, choose a trailing variety. Some annuals are either trailing or mounding.
Now back to the flower boxes… They had a very rough winter! We had many days below freezing which just is not typical of East Tennessee. They were several feet in length and all the leaves were dead. So I trimmed them back. I noticed the dirt in the flower boxes was very hard and when I started digging around I discovered the ivy roots had pretty much taken over and they were in there good and tight. When I found the Geraniums, I had to dig out the ivy in order to give the Ivy Geraniums a good healthy start. Take a look at the short video below as I demonstrate the effectiveness of the “Weeding Wonder Tool” in gardening.
The Ivy Geraniums are all planted, fertilized and ready to grow. Well, almost ready. It is snowing today and calling for a hard freeze tonight. They will get some burlap covers tonight. Crazy weather!
