Thanks to Velvet Finishes for providing paint for this project. All opinions are mine !
This dresser has been in the family for over 35 years. It was once adorned by pink and blue flowers and sat in my husband’s bedroom at his mother’s house.
When I met my husband as a teenager I have to say I was a little thrown off by the fact that he had such a feminine piece of furniture in his room. He didn’t seem to think twice about it. And that’s one of the things I love about him. He’s so secure with himself a floral dresser that his mother loved was just perfect!
I wish I had an original photo with the flowers and scrolling antique hardware but I don’t ! You will just have to imagine it. You see the photo above is phase two in the life of this piece. I painted over the flowers and switched out the hardware with more modern handles. (Why did I do that, this piece could have been precious with that old hardware… lesson learned).
I partially updated this piece just enough to go in Gavin’s room in our condo ! But I always new that I could make this piece have a totally fresh new look. And it needed one if we were going to keep it around.
To prep the piece I used Ready by Velvet Finishes to remove the dirt and grime from the surface of the piece.
The next step in re-habing this piece to give it a more modern look was to remove and replace the bottom scrolling wood trim. I removed it and measure it to make sure I could find a piece of trim that would fit.
As you can see from this photo the new trim is much more streamline and clean. After attaching the pieces I got to work painting the entire dresser with Velvet Finishes. The color I choose is called Handsome and boy I love it. It’s a shade of blue very close to navy.
It’s pretty handsome isn’t it! It took at least three coats but this paint was really cool to work with. It’s not a chalk paint or milk paint but it’s not exactly like your run of the mill latex paint either. It leaves an extremely smooth finish and the color is just perfect.
For the finishing touches I added street numbers that I picked up at Home Depot similar to these. ***
Now why in the WORLD would I add numbers to this chest of drawers? Well to be honest I think it’s going to make life a little easier for a certain little guy named Jude. (you can read all about his name and whether or not he is named after that Beatle’s song)
That’s right this handsome piece is going to move from it’s current location in my new office (check out my fab fabric wall here) to Jude’s closet. I’ll be removing the bench and the “Play” sign and adding this dresser to help organize all of his pajamas, bathing suits, undies, socks and shorts/pants.Then when I need him to grab something all I have to do is ask him to go to drawer #12345 or 6. Not only will it help him find his clothes faster it’ll help him with his number recognition.
So what do you think? Do you like the idea of numbers on drawers?
