It’s winter… it’s cold… you need hats, gloves and coats and so do your kids. Do you have a great coat rack to store them all on? All the coat racks I find are just that… hooks for coats. But not this one. This new DIY Wire Basket Coat Rack that I built has a space for storing those hats and gloves so that they are all kept in one place. And the best part of this project is that it’s so super EASY!!! Any one can do it!!!
Supplies for DIY WIRE BASKET COAT RACK
- 3 Chalkboard Bin Wall Hooks (on sale for $9.99 online at Kirkland’s.com)
- Wall Panel (Lowes for $15.00)
- 3/4 Screws (see photo below for exact screws)
- Electric Drill
Above is the picture of the $15 wall panel I found at Lowes. To put it in perspective it is about 48″ wide. I was so excited to see this… I am not sure if they have always had these or if this is a new product. But either way I have tons of ideas for these panels.
To make this super easy wire basket coat hanger all you have to do is evenly space each basket out on the wall panel. Placing one basket in each section.
Measure from the bottom of the panel to the hooks to get them all even because each basket is a different size. If you measure where the hook is you will at least have all the hooks even.
Mark all the screw holes at the top of the screw bracket not the bottom larger hole.
Pre-drill some small holes with a drill bit and then use screws to attach the baskets.
Use chalk or chalk markers to add names to each plaque.
And that’s it. Now all you have to do is secure it to the wall. Unfortunately, I don’t have a space big enough for this coat rack so I will be giving it away during my speaking engagement at the Nashville Home Show. I speak at 2pm so if you are local I would love to see you there!
I’ll be speaking about creating environments in your home that promote kid’s independence. This coat rack is exactly the type of thing that makes it easy for children to be independent and responsible. It’s so easy for them to hang their coats on and store their accessories. Hang it at child’s height and they’ll be able to do it all themselves! Come see how to make this and many more ideas!
I am still planning on replacing my Suitcase Organizer for a new coat rack organizer but this one just won’t fit. Do you have a space for this in your house? If so make one now in less than 10 minutes!

The pops of color on the chalkboards look great. I think any kid would love to have their very own basket and coat hook at their height. Great idea!
