Finally with our Easy Garden Extension done this spring, we are planting Asparagus. Asparagus is a delicious perennial vegetable that requires it’s own spot to establish and grow. It does take some patience though, because you have to wait to harvest the following year. Hopefully, by next spring, we will be enjoying Asparagus fresh from our back yard garden.
This is the only Asparagus roots that I could locate this spring, so I went for it. Thankfully, they have all come up.
Let me just say that I am a total newbie at this and had a hard time understanding the directions for planting on the back of the package. I am accustomed to digging a hole and putting a plant in. So, I turned to our followers on Facebook for some expert advice. Here is what they taught me:
- Be sure and dig the trenches with the mound inside.
- Spread the roots on the mound and cover with a couple of inches of soil.
- Plant a lot!
I was totally confused, especially when I opened the package and saw what looked like dehydrated Octopus, so getting this advise was really helpful. THANK YOU FACE BOOK FOLLOWERS!
Here is a picture of them coming up. It is hard to see them for the weeds that also came up. A gardeners work is never done. So, it is time to get rid of these weeds and take control! I found this very helpful article on Asparagus and weed control. Let’s just say that I am now on a mission to control the Chaos of Weeds in my garden with Straw. Slowly but surely, my garden will be covered in straw by the end of the summer.
The only option of weed removal that I have is to get them out by hand. I bought this nifty little Garden Seat – Rocker Seat because weeding was just killing my back. The rocker has really helped. Maybe I will do a post on that soon!
After a few hours of tedious weeding. We are finally VISUALLY weed free. However, I know that those little roots and seeds are still in that soil. So it is time to fight back! So off to Lowes goes the hubby for a few bales of straw.
Okay, I am feeling much calmer now that the straw is down. The first row is really doing well, the second row is coming along. I planted it a week or so later. Hopefully, it will catch up.
Until next time, enjoy your back yard gardening or join us to read about our adventures in Calming The Chaos!
Happy Days!

When I was a kid, we had asparagus growing in our yard. My parents didn’t plant it, and it was never clear to me whether the previous owners had or it had been there for years. It’s something that I have always wanted to try, but we don’t really have a good space for a garden. All of our gardening is done in pots and we get the rest of our veggies from our CSA and the farmer’s market! I’ll be curious to follow along on this and see how it goes. Maybe I can find a spot!

Awesome Thanks Michelle. LEt us know if you attempt to grow it and how it does.

Don’t just use straw. You should use pine straw as asparagus thrives in acidic soil and the pine straw breaks down in such a way that it makes the soil more acidic. Good Luck!

Thanks for the tip Ralph! I was just getting ready to add some more straw, I will use pine straw instead.
