Owning an older home is most interesting. There are little things that you really don’t notice while you are working on the big things.
Like the snaggletooth step coming up from the sidewalk. Ideally, the entire sidewalk should be replaced, but somehow I can’t see a brand new sidewalk here, so this project is way down the list.
I have spent a ton of time working on the banks in the front of the house and thinking about what to do with the old concrete steps and the snaggletooth at the top.
I suppose I could take a power washer to them and wash away the age and the moss and then stuff some rocks inside the gaping cavity.
But, I really like it, the age and the color and the moss and wouldn’t the rocks just come back out again?
But the more I look at the snaggletooth step, the more it looks like mouth with teeth. This I don’t like and find it hard to believe that car loads of children have braved these steps at Halloween probably to go home and have nightmares about getting eaten by the steps….
Then the idea of covering it up came to me. At the same time I realized that we really needed house numbers closer to the street.
So, I painted a board white, attached some house numbers and glued it to the step.
I couldn’t believe the difference!
It’s like the difference in a person who has bad teeth and gets veneers. When they smile they look like a completely different person.
Scary, Snaggletooth Step GONE!
House Numbers nearer to the street DONE!
Now that the” teeth” are fixed we can add some ivy extensions and jewelry for a much more friendly appearance.
and one less scary thing for the trick or treaters…
In fact, we are looking down right welcoming moss and all…

We did the same sort of thing with our wood front door. My hubby liked the little diamond window in the door and when shopping for a new door we just couldn’t decide on one that would be just as nice. Problem: the previous owners never changed out their screen for the storm window part of the storm door in the winter the bottom edge of the door had warped and started peeling. I painted the whole door at one time and tried to patch up the bottom. Didn’t look good . . . then I got the idea of stripping the door and staining it, but adding a brass plate to the bottom to cover up the mess down there. It looks great! And no one knows what’s under the brass plate . . . well, until now.

I LOVE kick plates on doors! I think they just complete the door and protect the bottom (or cover it up). Great idea and thanks so much for stopping by!
