Nope this isn’t some kind of fancy pumpkin on the rocks mixed drink. In fact, it isn’t anything fancy or glamorous at all. It isn’t staged or propped and I spent no time decorating or cleaning. What it is, is fall at my house…
and it really is pumpkins on the rocks. Wasn’t it just the other day that this area was blooming and brimming with flowers and I was the Queen of Orange Day Lily? How quickly the landscape changes with a frosty night that lays down the lilies and covers them with leaves and we have to say good bye until spring.
When the pumpkins started to “melt” on the front steps, I couldn’t bear to toss them in the compost just yet. The color is still so rich and look there are seeds, seeds to share with the wild life. What a perfect way to end fall on the rocks in my flower garden.
It won’t be long before the birds come calling for some tasty treats and they will find them here, on the rocks.
and who knows? Maybe there will be pumpkins growing here next year. Maybe another volunteer pumpkin patch…
I feel so blessed to have trees, big old trees in my yard that create a blanket of fall colors. Almost too pretty and perfect to rake and they crunch and swoosh when you walk in them. There is just no other sound like it!
Okay, so I am trying to justify someway to get out of raking the leaves besides the fact that I broke my rake. But they are pretty in a seashell covering the beach kind of way.
and Pa’s old plow has found it’s resting place underneath the dogwood and seems to beckon the leaves to come gather around no matter how many times I rake or blow them away.
With the turn of each season I am so excited to decorate, stage and photograph something pretty to share with you. I create container gardens and adorn the door with garland and place the scarecrow on it’s chair and make pillows out of burlap.
Then I am off to another project or caught up in life when fall in real time takes over. Not a nook or cranny or corner is left bare as fall does it’s own decorating and has it’s own way.
Even the Porch Owls have turned their backs as to look the other way…
After dining on the porch there is the wind that blows the confetti of nature around and reminds us that we are not in control of anything and that there is beauty in everything around us even the things that we do not create. I am taking time to appreciate and enjoy fall, in real time. Hope you are too!
