Welcome, It’s week two of the One Room Challenge. Last, week I showed you our plan for Jude’s Rustic Adventure Room and I shared tips on how to decorate with your kids. Jude has very specific opinions on how he wants his new room decorated. We gave him several options for his bed and once he picked out the cabin bed we knew the decor would have to complement it. Which leads us to the “Feature Wall”.
Jude and I looked at several murals and focal wall ideas online and we both agreed that this one was “the One”. It’s a far cry from his feature wall I created a custom stencil for. It really is like one big piece of art. And like small pieces of art I felt like this large piece of art also needed a frame.
To be totally honest the frame was not part of the plan. The mural is actually 12 feet wide. Three of Jude’s walls are 12 feet or less but each of those walls has a door or a window on them. With the mural being a pretty hefty investment and a huge part of the design I didn’t want to cut any of it off or cover it up with the bed.
I decided to hang the mural, which comes numbered and pre-pasted, on the largest wall which is about 13 feet wide.
I found this barn grey shiplap which is only about $13 for a 12 foot piece. It made the perfect frame and was super easy to hang with a nail gun. I’m planning on using this shiplap above our cabinets in our great room.
I absolutely love a great feature wall! But are you wondering if a feature wall is right for your space? Here are 5 reasons why I think feature walls are the best!
Reasons to Create a Feature Wall
- Feature walls can add texture and dimension to an otherwise bland or boring room.
- Feature walls can create whimsy, spark imaginative play, and inspiration.
- Feature walls can tie a room together and add that extra something the room was missing.
- Feature walls can typically be added or changed out easily.
- Feature walls are just plain fun and interesting!
But don’t just take my word for it, we had 5 neighborhood kids over this week. As they entered Jude’s room, I could hear them squealing with excitement. “It’s like we are in a real forest!”
Stay tuned for next week, I’m going to show you how to make the wooden cornice. It’s the easiest most affordable cornice EVER!
