Buttons and Branches Christmas Decor

This is the last in the series, One item,  What will you create? hosted by Shauna at Satori Designs for the Living.  The last item was buttons! I just love buttons and somewhere in the recesses of my semi-hoarder mind, I just knew I had some.

This project contains three of my favorite elements, nature, cans and buttons.  Combine them and whala we have an adorable button tree.  Let me tell you how it all started…

Sure enough, I came across this little stash of buttons and stuff left over from a project many years ago. I was soooo glad that I saved them.  I have also been saving aluminum cans for awhile. I don’t really know why. I just feel a big can project coming on!

Umsa and I gathered up these branches on our walk this morning and I decided to make a Christmas Button Tree!

Here are the materials I used:

• Styrofoam. I used a block for holding the branches as I sprayed painted and a scrap to place in the can.
• Cans.  This contain the tree. I brought out several sizes so that I could chose.
• White spray paint
• Buttons and ribbon
• Fishing line
• Scissors
• Glue Gun

I spray painted the can and the little tree branches white. Notice my DIYer’s manicure? Isn’t it pretty?  Then a scrap of Styrofoam was hot glued into the can.

 Then the tree was created by sticking the branches into the can.  So far pretty easy.

The next step will not have a picture because, there was no one here to take it and it require both hands.

Now to apply the buttons…

I raided my son’s fishing box for some clear fishing line which worked great. It can be threaded right into the button holes and then tied to the tree. I decided to use red and white. It was a little tedious, but I just relaxed and enjoyed the process.  A pretty ribbon was added along with some very old greenery. (I’ve had since 1980’s) Then came the magic….

As I placed my beautiful little button tree on a tray it miraculously started to snow…. okay so it didn’t snow.  But I can still dream of a white Christmas!
