Preparing pets to move

As many of you know, we have been living in various hotels for over 7 weeks now. We never planned on being out of a house for 2 months. I would say we didn’t plan on being “homeless” for nearly 2 months but I am really careful about using that word because there are so many people and pets that are actually homeless, meaning they don’t have a home, hotel, or place to stay at all. I have such a huge space in my heart for the homeless pets and people of our country that I would never want to use the word “homeless” lightly.

Last year I visited a local pet shelter and discovered something so sad. Did you know, each year, approximately 3.4 million United States cats are taken in by animal shelters and only half of those cats are adopted? A lot of those cats in shelters are ones that are just left behind when families move. Either they can’t afford care during transition or just simply didn’t plan well. It’s very sad but true.

Unfortunately, many pets are abandoned at shelters when people relocate or move. Millions of those abandoned cats are taken in by shelters. And I’m sure you are wondering how they are all fed and maybe even what you can do to help? To help Purina Cat Chow reach its goal of donating five million meals to shelter cats across the country, cat people can purchase any size bag of Purina Cat Chow from July 1 through July 31. For every bag purchased,Purina Cat Chow will donate one meal, up to five million meals, directly to Rescue Bank.

Preparing Pets to Move

Although many pets are abandoned during moves we would never consider doing that to our pets!  Instead, we had to make sure we had a plan for preparing our pets to move. Being that we have been living in hotels for 7 weeks we were very concerned about preparing our pets to move. After all both our cat and dog were both homeless at one time and we definitely wanted to make the moving process easier on them.

Steps to Prepare Your Pets to Move

1. Find a Person or A Place for Your Cat That You Trust

2.  Provide Your Pet Sitter with Information about Your Cat (subscribe for free printable)

3. Bring Your Cats Liter Box

4. Provide Pet Sitter with Your Cats Toys or Bed

5. Communicate with Your Pet Sitter Regularly

6. Leave the Pet Sitter with Emergency Numbers

7. Bring Plenty of Your Cats Favorite Purina Cat Chow

We opted to take our cat Reeve to a friend’s house and pay her to watch him for the time we are living in hotels. She has been such an amazing cat sitter. She sends us frequent videos and photos and lots of updates.  She was super shocked at how much Reeve loves to eat his favorite food. Seriously, she sent me a text letting me know how much he eats!  She’s definitely going to have to go out and get more food since he’s obviously using food for comfort since he misses us! I’m just glad that the money we use on food during the month of July is going to a good cause! Remember: the simple act of buying a bag of food for your cat can help the cat community-at-large and feed a cat in need looking for their forever home.
