Want to start plants for your garden indoors but short on space? There is room for 91 seeds in this DIY space saving seed starter!
Recently I wrote about discovering the Seed Plug Tray and boy is it ever nifty! After my tomato seedlings were up, I wanted to start some cantaloupe seeds but my tomato seedlings were not ready for transplanting yet. So, I simply cut off the section containing the tomato seedlings.
The seed plug tray I bought from a local nursery has 406 cells and measures 11 x 21 inches. This tiny 3.5 x 11 section of my seed plug tray has room to germinate 70 tomato seedlings!
You can purchase similar seed plug trays online such as those with 200 cell trays. The sections are a little larger which means the plug would be larger and it could remain in the tray longer before transplanting but you would have less plugs. After all not everyone needs to start 70 tomato seedlings indoors!
Then I cut another section containing bell pepper and cantaloupe seeds. Usually I wrap my seed trays in plastic wrap but I discovered that this little tray fit perfectly inside an inexpensive 5.5 x 11 inch plastic food storage container. The kind you can buy in the plastic wrap section of the grocery store.
In fact, you can cut the seed plug tray to fit any size plastic storage container you have on hand. So it can be customized to your space and the amount of seeds you want to start.
Placed next to my sunny kitchen window this container will heat up my seeds and self water them until they grow to the top of the container.
