Some days, I swear I feel like I am losing my mind. You see, clutter and mess drive me to the edge of insanity. I have been like this since childhood. I am constantly sorting and organizing and “putting things away”. My son and husband however, cannot seem to find anything unless it is “laid out” in the open on a surface. A counter top, a table, the mantle, the floor, a chair. They would be perfectly content to live in a a warehouse full of tables. Maddening! Especially when it comes to tools.
So here’s how it goes. My husband prepares to do a repair that requires, let’s say a screw driver. After 30 minutes or so of feverish searching he finds me to let me know he is going to Lowes. Why I ask? “Well, I thought that I had a small flat head screwdriver but it must have gotten lost.” I stop what I am doing, and find it within 2 minutes. I am the finder of things that are “hidden”.
I have tried all sorts of tool storage, starting with the ever popular tool box.
About the only thing this is good for is storing tools that are rarely used. Because they are all in a jumble and “hidden” in the dark. I am accused of “hiding” things all the time!
When I first saw this I thought it was genius and would solve all our issues. I eagerly placed all my tools in the little openings around the bucket. I hated it. They all ended up in the bucket.
It is however great at storing my sander and my drill.
Still a jumble but visible, not hidden.
You see, we live in a very old house with no garage or storage building. We have a basement where tools that aren’t used often can be stored, but with all the constant projects, we need the basic tools close by.
Then I got the idea of turning the back of this ordinary closet door into a sort of a tool storage area. It was easy and fun!
And I do believe we have a tool organization winner!
It started with a piece of peg board that I found on the cull cart at Lowes for just $3.00!
I cut it to fit the upper part of the door with my awesome Rockwood Blade Runner portable table saw!
I have plans for the lower part of the door as well.
I had a variety of peg board hooks left over from a time that we did have a garage with a large peg board and it was awesome for storage!
These hooks are the basics…
I placed these little pieces on the back so that there would be about a quarter of an inch space between the pegboard and the door.
I put two on the top and bottom and one in the middle
Then I used sheet rock screws to attach it to the door.
Then I had a blast placing my hooks. organnizing and placing my most used tools and accessories that always seem to elude wihen neeeded.
Like…
The paint can opening or my carpenter’s pencil sharpener.
Our new screw driver set is neatly hanging in a row so the correct one can be spotted in a jiffy. I just love how the hooks can arrange to hold odd shapes or even placed inside another tool to utilized all available space.

What a great idea. We have an older home only the doors are those cheap hollow core doors. The door to out pantry would be perfect for additional storage. The pantry is deep and I can just imagine how I can utilize the extra space.
Yes, this door is a new hollow door too. It was easy and I just love arranging the peg hooks!
love this. My husband like yours will spend ages looking for the right tool then when he has finished the job just leave the tools there where the fairies will put them away. Think I might make him this for his birthday love love love
Yes gotta love the “put away fairies” oh and the “find it fairies” can’t forget them! I had a lot of fun doing this and it was EASY!
I love this idea. We have a closet right in from the garage that needs this. It’s hard to see all our tools when they’re tucked in a tool box or on the floor.
