It is that time of year for Growing Veggies From Seeds! Yippee! Even though it is 7 degrees outside and everything is covered in ice, we can get started on a beautiful garden, indoors, with very little materials, starting with the Seed Plug Tray.
Last year while visiting William’s Greenhouse, I discovered the Seed Plug Tray. As I was looking at the tomato plants in one of the greenhouses, I spied some ladies transplanting seed plugs from this type of tray. I was like, “where have you been all my seed starting life?”
You see these trays have tiny little openings about the size of a penny and about 2 inches deep. This allows seeds to sprout and grow deep vertical roots. Thus the name “Plugs”. After the seedling has outgrown the plug tray, it will be transplanted into a larger container to continue growing. For me, that will be Styrofoam cups.

I was able to start plenty of my heirloom tomato seeds that where saved last year on paper towels. I also started cucumber, squash, bell peppers and marigolds.
This tray also helps with the ability to place one seed per opening. I used some tweezers to pull the tiny seeds from the paper towels then pressed down with a pencil.
I was able to get more than enough seeds planted for my back yard garden in this one tray!
Here is it all planted, watered, covered and sitting in a sunny window. Ready to burst into life and bring us Spring Garden Goodness!
