My project of the year, so to speak, is my office where large stenciled feathers float on beautiful gray walls. Dark old floor boards proudly display the wear and tear of the years and finally after much stripping, sanding and painting we have bright white trim and refurbished office furniture.
I love it. It wasn’t exactly what was planned, but I love the way it turned out. There is a place for sewing, an area for working of projects and an area for computer work and everything is accessorized with thrift store finds, my favorite!
Some activities are best done standing. Computer and paperwork at the desk requires a comfortable office chair.
Because sometimes, I am there, for hours…
One day this chair appeared at my house, for free. It was a giveaway from the office.
I don’t pass on a FREE comfortable quality office chair, but let’s face it, this is NO beauty! It isn’t exciting and it doesn’t make me swoon.
So, I decided to try my hand at making it lovely starting with changing the color with spray paint.
Not just any spray paint, RUST-OLEUM Metallic Paint & Primer in One, in Satin Nickel, was the pray paint of choice for this project. Remember the vintage owl lamp that I bought for $5.00 at the thrift store? Yep, I used RUST-OLEUM on that transformation as well. It is one of my favorite projects made fast and easy with this paint in white!
I wheeled the chair outside on a clear sunny day and proceeded to spray the areas with several thin coats. Love this Satin Nickel color with the walls! Now to address the seat area. This blue mauve poly blend has got to go!
I decided to use a drop cloth from Lowes to construct a slip cover. I washed and dried the drop cloth to make sure it was good and shrunk in case I need to wash the slip cover in the future, which is very likely indeed.
Slip covering is fun, but you have to be mentally prepared for a lot of trial and error. Since the chair is my three dimensional pattern, there is also a lot of pre-planning and thought that goes into the design. It’s almost like making a dress on a dress form kinda thing.
You also have to work the design around pieces of the chair that are permanent such as the arms. So, I started at the seat and went from there…
Can you believe this is the same chair? Doesn’t she wear her new dress well?
That blue mauve blend with black legs and arm has been transformed into something that can’t be bought!
That’s why I love free even if it doesn’t match or fit in it’s original form.
The back was dressed up with an old crocheted round table cloth tied in a pony tail in the back.
It is an exercise in creativity and ingenuity which is so much more fun that spending tons of money for a certain look.
I love the look and feel of this laundered drop cloth so much that now I am thinking drapes…
