Hello from the accidental pumpkin patch! This little guy was number 11 and lost his stem so I decided to try out a new idea. I am going to turn him into a pumpkin planter for succulents! Succulents are so pretty this time of year. I happened to have some that needed re-potting anyway so here we go.
I cut off his top and scooped out the insides and I made sure to save the seeds! In case you missed the whole thing on our Face Book page, we had this vine grow out of compost and had no idea what it was. Our awesome knowledgeable fans helped us figure it out. We ended up with 11 pumpkins! It has been such fun having a pumpkin patch!
Because Succulents need to dry out, a little terracotta pot was placed inside to house them. I think they are called Hens and Chicks or something? I am terrible with plant names. Let me goggle it…. be right back. Okay, found it, yes Hens and Chicks and it is very forgiving and hardy. The garden centers have some really pretty varieties of succulents this time of year which makes this a really fun, fast and easy project and I might add, a very lovely fall gift.
I like the Hens and Chicks because the little Chicks are born and hang over the side. So cute and I just love the color and texture with the pumpkin.
We love the pumpkin planter idea and hope you do too. Just imagine, pansies or mums in there as well…. endless PPP’s Pumpkin Planter Possibilities…

Great question Marilyn! They made a potting soil mix just for succulents. I have see it at Lowes Hardware.
