Disclosure: We were gifted paint for this project by Oh Lola Vintage Artisan Chalk Paint. All opinions are mine. Lesley
Life is crazy… I don’t need to tell you guys that.
I had a plan… a good plan.
I would finish the boy’s bathroom that we started last August. (most current update here)
I would paint my entire kitchen, eating area and hearth room.
I would find a solution to the gapping/ oddly shaped Fireplace TV Nook.
I would paint all of my kitchen cabinets white.
And I would re-paint my hutch and dresser.
Oh and go to the pool everyday, and spend more one on one time with the kids, and keep the house really clean… and have a weed free yard.
And this was all suppose to happen this summer.
But life happened and 99.9% of the stuff on that list above ….. DID not.
The .1 % that did happen was the painting of this hutch…
This hutch is one of my favorite pieces. Mom got it for me several years ago for my birthday. She also got it for a great deal which makes it even better.
I first updated this cream colored hutch by painting the backboard dark brown. It looked amazing with my Misted Green walls in my condo and it looked great against the yellow walls in this house. But when I painted this space Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore, the piece looked dingy and old. So I decided it needed a little update. The changes are so subtle but they made all the difference.
First I had to decide what type of paint to use. I really wanted to try chalk paint. So I reached out to Oh Lola Vintage and asked if I could try out some of her Artisan Chalk Paint. Our friend Yadi, was kind enough to send us some paint so that we could show you the amazing results.
I decided on Antique White and Violetta.
Chalk Painted Hutch
To paint the hutch:
- no pre-sanding or primer was needed. I painted a base coat of Violetta directly on the hutch
- Let base coat dry
- Painted Antique White Over Violetta
- Distressed using a sander
- Mixed water with gray paint and gave the entire piece a gray wash
- Finished it off with a coat of clear wax
Instead of dark chocolate brown undertones there are now purplish blue tones showing through. This really ties in the colors of the drapes and my dishes that I used for accents.
(the drapes are from World Market and are no longer available… I’m so sorry)
How do you like bright colorful dishes? Since my bookshelf over near the table holds our everyday white dishes I figured this hutch needed to be filled with vibrant accessories.
Did I ever tell you guys that I lived overseas for 8 years? Yep, my husband was in the military and we were stationed in Germany.
The big thing to buy when we were there was Polish pottery
Also notice the decorative beer steins…. we have quite a few more.
I had no idea how much I would love all my pottery when I was collecting it. I just remember all of my friends getting together and going to Poland for the weekend and that’s what you bought… you know when you go to Poland with friends on a shopping trip.
Good thing I did because that stuff is expensive here in the states and it was pretty much dirt cheap over there.
So I was all for it. Funny enough I’ve had a love hate relationship with Polish pottery. When I lived in my condo my colors were very earthy so the patterns and colors did not work well.
But I have to admit it… I’m in a colorful mood in this house and I’m loving it again.
I love it even more with a mixture of the blue and white patterns. Some are Danish, some are French and some are Chinese. What a mixture.. but they look great together!
Would you ever think a stein from Germany, a Chinese Tea Set , Polish pottery and a Pipe from Afghanistan would pair well together. Well neither did I but I’m loving it!
I have always loved this plate I bought from Spain and have never had a place for it. Now that my hutch is a brighter white with the blue background my very special plate has a forever home. And it just makes me so happy!
If you are interested in Artisan Chalk Paint , Oh Lola Vintage has my stamp of approval. Give it a try. You can find out all about it here .
Now on to the next item on my to-do list. Painting this bad boy! Any suggestions? Take a look at the color chart above and tell me what you think?

I love what you’ve done!! The hutch is beautiful and the colorful dishes are just the right touch. Your bucket list is full but at least you can’t say you’re bored. I haven’t really used chalk paint but I’m working up to it!!

The hutch looks great, and the dishes look wonderful on display in it. =] As for the dresser, I think the Blue Bird color would look nice on it, but that’s just my opinion without knowing the colors of the room it would be in. =] You could maybe put the Antique White on first, then distress it after painting on the blue.

Or Vintage White, lol… My brain hasn’t caught up with me yet this morning. =]
